Pre-pictures

So for a few pictures of what we started with. The original kitchen was renovated, we think, in '74. When we moved in there was an ancient side by side fridge and the first Jenn-air ever made. We were able to find this fridge on Craig's list for the low, low price of a U-Haul rental.

Here is the peninsula, and the ever-modern blue dishwasher. We had just finished emptying out all the cabinets in preparation for Demolition.

The double wall oven only half worked, the basement stairs has 22" of clearance, due to the encroaching ovens, and the cutting board in the foreground had the annoying habit of falling out whenever you put more than an envelope on it. I was tempted to call this blog "The Devil Stairs" in honor of the flame red basement stairs.

Luckily this is now nothing but a memory. Next up: Demolition.

Firsties!

Since there are enough people doing this blog thing, I hope to be lost in the chatter, in a good way. The most important thing I have happening is a kitchen remodel, and I want to have a place where I can put down some of the disasters sure to be in store, and document the process. This will be a brand new, back to the studs, build out. Being only two or three years into this home ownership thing, it will be my first time with a large scale renovation and hope that things go well.

We started this process a while ago, like, March, when the first round of home forclosures were in progress. There were three bidders, all vetted by Angie's List. Everyone was nice enough, putting together a proposal that fit our budget, and we picked our man Mark.

This is a little odd, as I am not sure how personal to make this. Do I put my docs out there? My wife's name? I hope that the people that know me will excuse the hesitation as I get used to posting publicly my situation. I know that I will post photos of the project, those being what makes the internet bearable, but beyond that I will hold back for a while. Perhaps the mundane mystery of it will be appealing.

After finding the crew to do the work we waited 3 months until they could start. Most of that time was spent ignoring the start date and it's promise of 8-12 weeks of no running water. Cabinets were chosen from the middle of the price scale, good enough to last but not needlessly expensive. We decided to go for a laminate counter, got a new stove, and other than that, went along our merry way.

Next post will be the before pictures.
